Welcome to DMGT 2019

Global development has driven the need for better transportation around the world and it is projected that up to 5 million kilometres of roads will be constructed in the next 3 decades.  In China alone, there is currently over 20,000 kilometres of tunnels (railway, highway and water conveyance) being constructed in the mountainous areas in the southwest of China. Construction in such regions can be challenging due to geological faults or karst conduits. Resulting geohazrds such as water & mud inrush have been known to cause serious economic losses and adverse social impacts and even casualties.

We are pleased to announce the first international workshop on Discrete Methods in Geotechnical Engineering for Transportation which will be held at the university of Edinburgh on the 1st of August 2019. This is scheduled immediately after the 7th UK-China-International Particle Technology Forum which is also being held in Edinburgh.

The workshop will focus on the use of discrete methods for transportation geotechnical engineering and aim to gather 40-50 key researchers in the field from around the world. The workshop will look at the success to date in modelling and address future challenges in the field such as verification, calibration and validation.  This requires the modellers to work with experimentalists in providing physical measurements to inform the model, and to provide validation towards achieving a predictive model for simulation driven design.
